"Do not the most moving moments of our lives find us without words?" Marcel Marceau.

"Lee's alive."

It was a good thing Saul had already said those two words to me, otherwise I would've thought I'd slipped it completely, walking through the hatch to my quarters to see my son standing there. Ever since our sensors reported Colonial One destroyed by a nuke and Lee with her, I'd walked around feeling like I had a knife lodged between my ribs. But there he was, breathing and looking in better shape than I did ... and I relearned the fact that a knife hurts just as much getting pulled out as it does going in.

Headlines

Deep in one of Galactica's holds, a storage box sits. Deep in that box sits a thick, dusty scrapbook with William Adama's name on the inside cover. All of the similar books holding family pictures reside in his quarters, but this one contains dozens of newspaper articles spanning three-score years ...

Just a little reminder for anyone who hasn't voted yet: The polls for the Best of the Best Special Tammy Awards ends tomorrow, 2/28 at noon Pacific Time. Anyone can vote with up to six muse accounts, whether currently active or not. Your muses do NOT have to be a member of [livejournal.com profile] the_bigtammys in order to vote. To simplify, here are links to the three voting sections:

SECTION ONE

SECTION TWO

SECTION THREE

Please simply vote with the number of the category and the letter of the muse/prompt. Only vote for one of the ten nominees, not any write ins or honorable mentions.

And let me also say that this post is NOT a shill. Yes, both Bill and my new boy Ruairí are up for awards, and you can check my earlier post for more info, but this particular group of Tammys is a one-time-only deal, meant to honor the real legends of the various muse communities. Far more than winning, I want to see this one done right. Dang, just making the voting lists has been enough to put my squee buttons on permanent press. So go forth and vote for those you truly love, and let me tell you there's some heinously difficult choices to be made. And thank you all for reading. ^_^

Um. Pardon my blush.

Some of you are already aware that [livejournal.com profile] the_bigtammys is running a special event called The Best of The Best. Unlike the regular Tammys, which are only open to comm members, the mods opened nominations for these awards up to any muse that has ever existed since the inception of [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse. All of them. Whether currently active or not.

Given the vast number of wonderful characters and the huge amount of excellent writing to be found in that wide a field, you may understand how deeply honored I am that Bill Adama made the first of the final voting lists for both Outstanding Writing of a Male Heroic Character and Outstanding Writing of a Male Canon Muse.

This ... well, it kinda knocks my socks off. *looks down at bare feet*

ETA the First: Okay, the third and last voting post is up, and I just lost a toenail or two as well. Not only did Bill make the list for Outstanding Emotional Post and get a nomination nod for Outstanding Comedy/Humor post ... but my new boy Ruairí ([livejournal.com profile] sonofgranite) made the list for Outstanding Sexual Themes Post. WOW people. Just ... WOW.

Bill and I would also like to take a moment to salute the other BSG characters and folks from my various characters' f-lists who are up for awards on the first two lists, namely [livejournal.com profile] k_thrace, [livejournal.com profile] laura_roslin, [livejournal.com profile] model_numbersix, [livejournal.com profile] worsttraitorevr, [livejournal.com profile] alan_shore, [livejournal.com profile] antigone_grace, [livejournal.com profile] artiejackson, [livejournal.com profile] heythereslugger, [livejournal.com profile] iamdoom, [livejournal.com profile] ilookgreat, [livejournal.com profile] im_a_pc, [livejournal.com profile] isabel_giovanni, [livejournal.com profile] john_h_holliday, [livejournal.com profile] ki2k, [livejournal.com profile] onewingbloody, [livejournal.com profile] queenemma, [livejournal.com profile] robot_friends, [livejournal.com profile] shaman_x, [livejournal.com profile] smecker, [livejournal.com profile] spartan_queen, [livejournal.com profile] will_porter and [livejournal.com profile] ynez_castillo.

ETA the Second: Hokey smokes! Not only did [livejournal.com profile] alan_shore, [livejournal.com profile] antigone_grace, [livejournal.com profile] iamdoom, [livejournal.com profile] ilookgreat, [livejournal.com profile] isabel_giovanni, [livejournal.com profile] onewingbloody, [livejournal.com profile] queenemma and [livejournal.com profile] smecker gain another passel of noms, but [livejournal.com profile] canhasprompts, [livejournal.com profile] ifwebefriends and [livejournal.com profile] lt_wes_janson also join the list! *SQUEE!!!* Go read these people, folks! ^_^

Impossible

"Husker ... what the hell was that?!" Major Rich "Thrasher" Crandall, Atlantia's CAG, wearily rubbed the bridge of his nose before turning his disapproving gaze on the young officer in front of him.

"What got the job done, sir." Captain William Adama stood at a very aggressive species of attention before his desk, still wearing his flight suit. Crandall could practically smell the post-combat adrenalin rush radiating off of him.

ETA redux: Any mun (writer) can vote with up to six muses, provided that they've been active in a writing or RP community in the past six months. Here's a link to the five voting posts; the two categories Bill is up for are both in Section Five.
admiral_adama: (Survival)
If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about any one thing you wished ~ concerning yourself, your life, the future, or anything else ~ what would you want to know?

*soft snort* Another impossible hypothetical question, hm? All right, I'll play along.

Ultimately?

The only question I would ask has no useful answer.

Will we survive?

Will the human race find some way to evade destruction at the hands of the Cylons? Will we find a home where we can rebuild at least some of what we've lost? Does humanity have a future, or are we doomed to vanish into might-have-beens?

Even if the answer is yes, the human race does survive, I'm just not a fatalist. Free will exists, and I don't believe that any future is so cast in stone that humanity can't change it through our choices, actions .. or inaction. No matter what fate that hypothetical crystal would show me, we'll still have to find our own way to it. If we make mistakes, get complacent, fail to see what's in front of us because we're focused on what might happen, that hopeful future would pop like a soap bubble.

All right, I can hear you saying, then change your question. Try asking How does humanity survive?

What if the answer is, you don't?

Raven is a strong symbol of both creation and destruction. Wisdom through intelligence, observation, and challenge. Raven is strongly tied to the spiritual world, living in a constant state of otherworldly awareness. Raven people tend to be very introspective and savor time spent ‘alone’.

What do you live for?

Family. Humanity.

With only about 40,000 of us left, the two aren't very far removed from each other.

I live so that my son may one day have the life he chooses instead of the one that was forced on him.

I live for the day that children born to us will know open spaces without stark metal walls and an atmosphere of fear enclosing them.

I live for those evenings when Laura and I can share a drink on my couch and know that we brought them all through safely.

I live to lead. I live to defend. I live to serve.

On the good days, that's enough. When I go to bed knowing that the number on Laura's white board didn't go down that day, when maybe it even increased with a birth or two, that knowledge alone is enough to get me out of bed the next morning.

On the bad days, I reach for whatever I can. A few minutes of peace, a clasped hand, a smile ... a stolen moment. Whatever I can find to carry me that one day further.

Because the alternative ... is unacceptable.

Intrigue

"So ... did our resident genius finally finish your test?"

Bill Adama glanced up from the report he was signing and flicked a quick smile at his XO, seated across his desk. "He did. Green across the board."

Saul Tigh snorted. "Like there was ever a chance it was gonna be otherwise."

Adama chuckled, "Thanks for the vote of confidence." He handed the report back to Tigh, after which his friend settled back into his chair instead of rising to leave. "Something on your mind, Saul?"
