1 question.
1 chance.
1 honest answer.

*appraises him with a amiable smile*
Time has been good to you, Admiral.
*inclines her head in greeting*

My question:
I understand that in your Fleet there are people that have many copies.
What would you do if, one day, you encountered yourself (or yourselves)?

You're looking well yourself. *smiles*

Saul actually has standing orders in the event that happens. I am to be relieved of command and placed in the brig until the ... situation is sorted out.

If the Cylons hadn't come back...?

There are other, probably more important, questions I could ask, but I hope you won't consider it selfish that I chose that one.

*soft smile* Not at all.

If the Cylons hadn't come back ... I would have needed a place to stay during my visits to New Caprica. And eventually ... permanently.

*smiles sadly, refusing to let tears cloud her eyes*

I think we would've liked that.

*wry smile*

Damn Cylons.

Why do you keep forgiving me?

You've made mistakes, Kara, not committed crimes. Even with most crimes you do your time and get out eventually. *sighs* You punish yourself a helluva lot worse than I could.

And you're family.

I've heard it said, Admiral, that you credit your son and the president as the only things dividing your strategy from mine. Do you find it to the credit of one more than the other, or did it truly take both to turn you into the man you are?

There's no quantifying between them. It took both of them to convince me that giving humanity a chance at survival was more important than waging all-out war with the Cylons. The President showed me the stakes. Lee reminded me of what I stood to lose.

If you had known President Roslin's plan to steal my baby...?

You saw what happened the minute I found out, Lieutenant.

Of course, at the time she made her decision, your status was still much more ambiguous. But Helo was still one of my officers, so I would have done my damnedest to find out the reasoning behind the President's plan and come up with alternatives.

You inspire wariness in me. Caution. But outright fear?

No.

Why me for your XO?

I watched you struggle for more than a year to rebuild your trust and rapport with the rest of the crew. Successfully. Not everyone could have done that.

And there was the added benefit that, with Sharon on board, you weren't likely to want to muster out like so many others did.

All I did was listen to people and do what I thought was right. But I think it helped when Sharon finally joined the crew, so I'm glad for it.

And I see. *smiles* That's some inspired tactics.

Do you think Zak would have been able to make it, eventually?

I'm assuming you mean as a Viper pilot. The only honest answer I can give you is ... I don't know.

Kara said he didn't have the chops at the time. Could he have developed them? Maybe, but he would have been given only a couple of chances to do so if he'd washed out. So ... I don't know.

Sorry, that was a question that you just can't answer, with all the what ifs involved.

True. But it's also one you can't help asking. I've asked it myself more than once.

Why didn't you just threaten to have me shot instead of Cally?

Date: 2008-02-15 03:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] admiral-adama.livejournal.com
Because you might have been willing to take more of a risk with yourself than you would with her.

Threatening to shoot Cally was my best chance at not having to shoot anyone.

Rya Kibby. Remember her?

Would you have stopped me, if you could, and sent her back to her parents?

Date: 2008-02-15 03:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] admiral-adama.livejournal.com
No. What she wanted was not illegal at the time. I might have tried again to talk her out of it, but I had no right to force her to do anything.

I certainly wouldn't have sent her back to her parents.
