(TM) 206. Because it's not enough to just live ...

What do you live for?

Family. Humanity.

With only about 40,000 of us left, the two aren't very far removed from each other.

I live so that my son may one day have the life he chooses instead of the one that was forced on him.

I live for the day that children born to us will know open spaces without stark metal walls and an atmosphere of fear enclosing them.

I live for those evenings when Laura and I can share a drink on my couch and know that we brought them all through safely.

I live to lead. I live to defend. I live to serve.

On the good days, that's enough. When I go to bed knowing that the number on Laura's white board didn't go down that day, when maybe it even increased with a birth or two, that knowledge alone is enough to get me out of bed the next morning.

On the bad days, I reach for whatever I can. A few minutes of peace, a clasped hand, a smile ... a stolen moment. Whatever I can find to carry me that one day further.

Because the alternative ... is unacceptable.

Living for your family, however large it may be, is somethign I can fully understand. Living to make sure that their life is eased, I can appreciate indeed. For a long time I would also have shared your view of living only for them - maybe I still do - but I do find that living this way with the reward of enjoying your family and yourself - is something I have striven for. That makes it 'living', more than mere 'existing'.

But yes, I do understand that there is no alternative.

In any case, if you feel the need for the odd round of boxing or drinking, I have acquired quite a few nice bottles of high quality spirits.

Mun to Mun: This is perfectly Bill. It's heartbreaking to think that he doesn't live for himself.

And we've been having more and more bad days lately, you and I, haven't we?

[locked to Bill]

I need to know you're okay. That you have something to live for, just for you. I had that chance and there are things I've wished to have happened during that time, Bill. Don't do this to yourself. Don't just let the Admiral live. Let Bill live.

That's worth living for, B..., Admiral.

I only hope we all manage to do something worthwhile with the time and opportunity you're giving us.

It's this that I admire about you. It's from you that I've learned how to push ahead when I think that I can't. You are a leader. You've defended us against unimaginable attacks. And you've served us with more bravery than any medal or accommodation could represent.
